Leroy Brown (Sharky)
COACHES PROFILE: LEROY BROWN (SHARKY)
Leroy Brown, better known as 'Sharky' to most people in the Boxing fraternity, has been involved in the Boxing Game for more than twenty years. As a youngster he became actively involved in boxing, growing up at a time when Muhammed Ali was at his peak and the sport of boxing was very prominent. His interest became more serious after joining the Compton Arms Gym, then known as 'Rocky's'. He was invited by a friend to come and train with them and became addicted to the hard training regime which not only taught you to box, but also kept you fit and healthy. At that time top class local fighters were also training there, notably British & European Cruiser weight champion Tom Collins.
Following his committal to the sport in a training capacity, his enthusiasm soon became an obsession, and over the years he has been to many gyms in both a training capacity, and as a coach. This experience has stood him in very good stead today, associating with top fighters over the years, many of whom have had an affinity with what has been a very influential boxing gyms in Leeds, 'St. Patrick's Boxing Gym'. Although that gym is no longer around today, it has seen many fighters who have gone on to achieve success. This gym was run by the world respected Terry O'Neil. Sharky has learned his trade as a boxing coach whilst observing some of the best coaches this country has produced.
As a coach, the ability to communicate is fundamental, and Sharky is one of those people who has the ability to communicate with people at all levels. This is often the missing link between some disadvantaged kids, and the adults that often misunderstand them. Sharky has done much work in the community, in conjunction with Leeds City Council to help children with social problems, helping them to understand the importance and the need for self discipline, and respect for others.
Many top class boxers who are familiar with Sharky's work in the community will often do anything, including putting in appearances, to inspire young people to achieve. These include former British, Commonwealth, and European light heavy weight Champion Crawford Ashley, former British welterweight champion Derrick Roach;,Mark Hobson (Chris Aston' Gym), Darren Hobson (Peter Coleman's' Gym), Collin Manners, Nick Manners and Clint Johnson, to name just a few.
Sharky has been coaching at various gyms for many years now, however Sharkys Gym was founded in 2001, at the current location. Many individuals have benefited from training with Sharky, for fun, and also in both amateur and professional capacity. The most notable coaching achievements include:
Josh Warrington - National Schoolboy Champion (now 18, started training at 6 years old)
Nicola Adams - 3 ABA Titles, Multi National Gold Medallist, & World Tournament runner up & Silver Medallist (now 25, started training at 11 years old)
Levi Powell - Four Nations Champion, National School Boy Champion, Junior ABA runner up (now 20, started training at 6 years old)
Philip Clarke - ABA Novice Champion.
Danny Reynolds - A highly decorated and respected fighter with more than 80 amateur fights, and only 10 losses. Throughout his long amateur career Danny worked with Sharky for a number of years.. Danny is now currently undefeated as a professional with 13 fights.
The gym enjoys much success on the amateur circuit because of our attention to skill acquisition, whilst embracing a good work ethic. Both of these important factors are necessary in life today, and all of our members embrace the ethos of 'Sharkys Gym'... The long hard road to success is often a lonely one, however, with hard work, dedication and total self belief anything is achievable...
